Brisbane the Eighth is contractually and magically bound to find and groom his eventual successor - and until the time he does, he's going to have applicants pressing their faces up against his window and whimpering by the score. To thin the crowds out, he's offered to take them in for training - but only those applicants who are willing and able to pay 200 pims for his time.
The current Brisbane is the eighth to hold that name over this shop's one hundred and fifty year history; unique to many gemologists, the owner of Brisbane has to sign a contract stating that he or she will pick his or her successor when 'the time is right', and that successor will then take on the name of Brisbane for the duration of their tenure as owner. The current Brisbane knows more than just gems and precious stones, however, having come from a background heavy in the physical art of forges. Normally, Brisbane would be willing only to share his knowledge of enchantment; because of the bond you have with him over your love of jewels, he's willing to share not knowledge but workspace.
(Of course, the trade-off is that his apprentices are subject to his frequent flights of free verse on the matter of "the Radlant Catalina d'Uzzo, star-bright and kind" - a scowling, cow-faced woman who flatters a discount out of the poor old duffer every time she visits - but… well, to their credit, they're very heart-felt. And they rarely rise quite to the level of inducing nausea.)
